Friday Night Roundup: Ballinger, Sonora to Meet for District Title

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Ballinger Bearcats and Sonora Broncos took care of business Friday to set up a district-title game next week.

Ballinger rolled to a 61-28 win over Christoval, while Sonora held off Reagan County 52-44.

Both teams are now 7-1 overall and 4-0 in District 4-2A Division I.

Neither team can clinch the title outright next week, but they can at least clinch a share of the title and go a long way toward earning the district’s No. 1 seed.

Ballinger was in a precarious spot against Christoval without its starting quarterback, Wyatt Clemens, for the first half after he was ejected in the previous game.

However, backup QB Hunter Wilson stepped in and led the Bearcats to a 35-21 lead at halftime. He threw for 157 yards and three touchdowns on 5-of-10 passing with one interception.

Ballinger’s running game also showed up in a big way with two 100-yard rushers — Malachi Bentley (19 carries, 124 yards, 2 TDs) and Trey Lopez (13-101, TD).

The Bearcats’ defense then finished off the game late with two interceptions by Wilson and Macy Wagoner to help Ballinger outscore Christoval 20-0 in the fourth quarter.

Danny Alfaro had 15 carries for 180 yards and a TD to lead Christoval, which fell to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in district.

Ballinger will play at Sonora next week, while Christoval will host Forsan (7-1 overall, 3-1 in district).

Forsan held off Colorado City 40-35 to keep itself alive in the district-title race. The Buffaloes host Sonora in the regular-season finale Nov. 6.

Sonora found itself in a shootout against Reagan County, but the Broncos had more firepower, led by QB Aaron Segura, who threw for 448 yards and five TDs on 32-of-47 passing with one INT.

Fernando Arredondo had seven catches for 154 yards and a TD, while Jayden Welborn had nine catches for 111 yards. Wyatt Killough had eight catches for 84 yards and two TDs.

Armani Coronado led the ground game with 17 carries for 81 yards and two TDs.

Miles Clips Hamlin to Keep Playoff Hopes Alive

The Miles Bulldogs pulled off a 24-23 win over Hamlin to keep itself in the running for the district’s fourth and final playoff spot.

Miles improved to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in District 7-2A Division II. The Bulldogs can earn a playoff spot with a win at home over Cross Plains on Nov. 6.

Miles was led by Ryder Satepauhoodle, who had 19 carries for 184 yards and a TD.

Liam Yancy threw for 188 yards and a TD on 14-of-29 passing with one INT. Jaxton Bogs had five watches for 81 yards and a TD. Kaden Karmany had three catches for 64 yards.

Miles will visit Albany next week before its make-or-break game with Cross Plains. Hamlin (3-6, 1-4) is off next week before hosting Albany.

Robert Lee Routs Baird for 6th Straight Win

The Robert Lee Steers ran their winning streak to six games with a 67-22 victory over Baird on Friday.

Robert Lee improved to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in District 7-1A, setting up a district-title game next week at Highland, which is also 6-2 and 3-0.

Robert Lee’s Malachi Wauqua had another impressive showing by throwing for 182 yards and four TDs on 9-of-12 passing, along with 16 carries for 185 yards and four TDs.

Justice Immel had seven tackles and an INT on defense, and hauled in a 40-yard TD pass.

Baird (2-5, 2-1) will visit Paint Rock next week.

San Saba Holds Off Coleman in Defensive Battle

San Saba’s defense and running game helped grind out a 7-6 win on the road over Coleman.

San Saba held Coleman to 89 yards of its offense. Meanwhile, the Armadillos produced 260 yards, including 248 on the ground.

Jason Everett had 22 carries for 104 yards and a TD, while Graden Lebow had 20 carries for 86 yards.

Coleman’s defense did an admirable job keeping the Bluecats in the game, led by Chantz Adams (28 tackles, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble) and Nathaniel Guerrero (23 tackles and an interception).

San Saba (5-3 overall, 2-1 in District 7-2A Division I) will host Bangs next week. Coleman (5-3, 1-2) will visit Johnson City next week.

Veribest Wins Again, Sets Up Showdown With Water Valley

The Veribest Falcons won another important game Friday with a 51-20 victory over Irion County.

The Falcons are now 6-2 overall and 3-0 in District 8-1A Division I.

They'll host No. 10-ranked Water Valley (7-1, 2-1) next week for what is likely the second and final playoff spot from the district.

If Veribest were to pull off the upset, the Falcons would then have a chance at the district title in the regular-season finale Nov. 6 at Menard.

Veribest was picked to finish in fifth place in the district by Texas Football, so the Falcons have already surpassed those expectations with wins over Sterling City and Irion County to assure itself of at least a third-place finish.

Irion County fell to 4-4 overall and 0-3 in district and will host Menard next week.
