Coleman Names Edington Interim Head Football Coach

COLEMAN, TX — Longtime offensive coordinator Zach Edington has been promoted to head football coach at Coleman High School.

Edington replaces John Elder, who resigned recently after 13 seasons leading the Bluecats’ football program.

Elder’s unexpected departure came just weeks before the start of football practices, which begin Aug. 3.

Coleman turned to Edington, who has been with the school for 22 years, including 14 as the football team’s offensive coordinator. He has also served as the head boys and girls golf coach.

“Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to excellence, leadership, and the traditions of Coleman ISD,” the school district said in a statement. “Edington's experience, commitment to excellence, and passion for Coleman ISD make him well-prepared to lead the Bluecats into the 2026 football season.”

Edington inherits a Coleman team that returns six starters on both sides of the ball from last year’s 2-8 campaign.

The Bluecats aren’t far removed from a strong run of success when they had a combined record of 29-7 from 2021 to 2023.

Coleman will begin the upcoming season Aug. 28 at Grape Creek.
