Lake View Chiefs Suffer Third Straight Overtime Loss

SAN ANGELO, TX — If ever a team was looking forward to its bye week, it’s the Lake View Chiefs.

Not only are they battling injuries, but the Chiefs have been playing a lot of football lately.

For the third straight week, they found themselves in overtime Friday. And for the third straight week, Lake View ended up on the wrong end of it with a 27-21 loss to Pflugerville Connally at San Angelo Stadium.

The Chiefs had to fight just to make it to OT this time after falling behind 21-7 with 9:38 left in the game. Chris Alvizo led a couple of late scoring drives, capped by a 6-yard TD pass to Aiden Rivera with only 13 seconds remaining.

Gabe Alvarez hauled in a 43-yard pass to get Lake View down to the 6-yard line with 23 seconds left.

Lake View was unable to score on its opening possession of OT, however, and Connally scored on its first play when Judah Walker took a short pass and ran it in from 25 yards out.

Lake View, which would have a record of 6-1 if it had won its three OT games, instead fell to 3-4, though it was an encouraging showing against a Class 5A Division I opponent.

"It's a testament to the team and their never-quit attitude," Lake View head coach Hector Guevara said. "They had each other's backs and played a good game. We just came up short."

Lake View was also playing without wide receivers Chris Rodela, Andrew Young and Juju Lacy, but other players stepped up in their absence.

Aiden Rivera had another strong performance with 11 carries for 112 yards and a TD, along with his game-tying TD catch.

Isaiah Rivera had six catches for 82 yards, including a 47-yard TD grab when he got behind the defense to pull the Chiefs within 21-14 with 7:15 remaining.

Alvarez added five catches for 60 yards.

Alvizo finished with 246 passing yards and two TDs on 21-of-38 passing with one interception.

Zadrien Garivay had an interception and a fumble recovery, while also catching three passes for 43 yards.

"The kids that played today, they did a great job, and that's what we're proud of," Guevara said.

After a bye next week, Lake View will open District 3-4A Division I play Oct. 23 at home against Plainview.

"(The bye) will be good for us," Guevara said. "I think the kids deserve a little R and R, and we'll just get ready for district."

Connally improved to 2-4 and will resume play in District 12-5A Division I next week at home against Leander Glenn.

Connally was led by running back Taj Gaddy, who had 22 carries for 105 yards and a TD.

Trajin Alexander threw for 224 yards and three TDs on 15-of-22 passing with one INT. He launched an 88-yard TD pass to Rahsaan Franklin early in the second quarter to give the Cougars a 14-0 lead.

Franklin finished with five catches for 139 yards. Walker had six catches for 60 yards and two TDs.
