COLLEGE STATION, TX — The Sonora Broncos, who were picked to finish last in their pool at the 7-on-7 state tournament by Texas Football, swept all three of their games Thursday to win the pool.
Sonora drew a tough pool with three fellow state returners, but the Broncos proved to be up to the challenge with wins over Kenedy (13-12), Daingerfield (19-7) and Bosqueville (34-20).
Sonora now moves on to the knockout portion of the Division III championship bracket, which begins at 8 a.m. Friday at Veterans Park in College Station.
Sonora will take on Albany, with the winner set to play either Van Vleck or Tioga in the next round. It will take five victories today to claim a state title.
Sonora has been one of our area’s most consistent 7-on-7 teams with 12 trips to state since 2010. The Broncos are the Concho Valley’s only representative at state this year.
Sonora, a Class 2A Division I school, is competing in Division III for 7-on-7, which comprises schools from 1A to 3A Division II.
The Broncos are coming off a 7-4 season last fall and are expected to be one of the Concho Valley’s top teams in 2026.
