WINK, TX — Concho Valley schools have their last chance this week to qualify for the 7-on-7 football state tournament.
So far, no one has punched their ticket.
The last qualifying tournament for schools in Division III (Class 1A to 3A Division II) will be held Thursday in the small West Texas town of Wink.
The field consists of Wink, Sonora, Axtell, Crane, Alpine, Sudan, Junction and Coahoma.
The top two teams will advance to state.
Wink and Coahoma have already qualified for the 32-team state tournament that will be held June 25-27 in College Station.
Wink, Coahoma, Goldthwaite, Hawley and Albany are teams from our greater region that have qualified, but they’re all on the outskirts of the Concho Valley.
Sonora and Junction represent the final opportunity for our coverage area to be represented.
Last year, the Concho Valley had four qualifiers in Sonora, Junction, Brady and Eldorado.
In Tom Green County, San Angelo Central has reached state 10 times but didn’t participate this year. San Angelo Lake View has never been to state. Texas Leadership of San Angelo qualified in 2022, and Christoval reached state in 2016.
The only Concho Valley school to ever win a 7-on-7 state title was Miles in 2022 and 2023.
