RICHLAND SPRINGS, TX — One of the state’s best six-man football programs has finally found its next head coach.
Richland Springs, which has been without a football coach since February, announced Monday that James McIntyre Jr. has been hired as the school’s new head football coach and athletic director.
McIntyre was previously at Richland Springs in 2023, when he served as the defensive coordinator and helped the Coyotes reach the state semifinals.
He was then an assistant at Class 4A Pearsall before spending last year leading Rocksprings to a 5-4 record as the Angoras’ head coach and AD in their first year of six-man football.
McIntyre and his wife, Terryn, have three children — Aaliyah, Amiyah and Josiah.
“Me and my family couldn’t be more excited to come back home to Richland Springs ISD,” McIntyre said in a Facebook post published by Richland Springs Coyote Booster Club. “We are so grateful for the warm welcome the community of Richland Springs has shown throughout this process.
“Thank you to Superintendent (Bobby) Fryar, Principal (Roger) Roesler, and Coach Jerry Burkhart for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. I’m excited to get to work and bring home State Championship #10.”
McIntyre will inherit a Richland Springs team that returns three players from last year’s 1A Division II state finalist. The Coyotes bring back offensive lineman Brice Roesler, defensive lineman Layne Ward and kicker Evan Deeds.
Richland Springs’ nine state titles are the most of any six-man program in Texas, but the Coyotes haven’t won it all since 2019.
Richland Springs parted ways with former head coach Harley Ethridge in February due to “budget challenges.”
In doing so, Richland Springs also lost all-state spread back Cohen Ethridge, who will join his father next season in Menard.
McIntyre played high school football at Milford, where he was an all-state player, before competing in college at Tarleton State University.
James McIntyre Jr. has been named the new head football coach at Richland Springs High School.
