Spurs' Wembanyama Trading Card Sells for Over $5 Million

SAN ANTONIO, TX — A basketball card of San Antonio Spurs young phenom, Victor Wembanyama, sold for $5.11 million in a private sale recently.

The 1-of-1 2023-24 Panini Prizm Black parallel sold in a private sale facilitated by Fanatics Collect. Fanatics confirmed to sale to ESPN on Tuesday. The sale marks the highest price ever paid for a Wembanyama card and ranks as the fourth-most expensive basketball card and the 11th-most expensive sports card overall.

The sale is also the most expensive known transaction for a non-autographed NBA card and one of three sports cards to sell for at least $5 million in 2026.

The previous record for a Wembanyama card was $860,100, set in February 2025 through a Goldin auction for another 1-of-1 parallel from the same Prizm set. Wembanyama does not have any licensed autographed rookie cards, as he holds an exclusive deal with Fanatics, which took over the NBA trading card license in October. During his rookie season, the license was held by Panini.

The card received a grade of 10 from Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) after being pulled in a live break by NorCal Sports Cards. Its grading process drew attention after a 2024 video showed then-owner Thomas Lindenthal bringing the card to PSA’s parent company, Collector’s headquarters, where he acknowledged Kurt’s Card Care following the grade reveal.

Card cleaning and alteration are widely scrutinized in the collecting industry, and PSA policies prohibit grading cards that show evidence of alteration, including cleaning or restoration.

Wembanyama recently became the NBA’s first unanimous Defensive Player of the Year, earned unanimous All-Defensive First Team honors and finished third in MVP voting this season.

The Spurs are currently in a 2-2 deadlock with the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals. Game 5 is set to be played on Tuesday night in Oklahoma City. Tip-off in that matchup is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Spurs routed the Thunder in Game 4, 103-82.
