Wall, Mason Lead UIL Lone Star Cup Standings

AUSTIN, TX — Two Concho Valley schools are closing in on the prestigious UIL Lone Star Cup.

Wall and Mason each lead their classification for the Lone Star Cup, which measures a school’s overall performance in academic and athletic competitions.

The final update in the standings are expected to be released in late June or early July.

In Class 3A, Wall has 85 points for a seven-point lead over back-to-back defending champion Holliday, and the Hawks still haven’t received points from their baseball team (which is in the state semifinals) and softball team (which lost in the regional final).

Wall has had an unprecedented run of success this school year, highlighted by state titles in football and girls basketball, which each yielded 18 points.

The Lady Hawks’ volleyball team earned 12 points by reaching the state semifinals, and the boys golf team and boys track team scored eight with their runner-up finishes at state.

Wall’s boys basketball team earned six points by winning district and a playoff game.

Wall earned five points from its performance at the state tennis meet (highlighted by Amelia Taylor winning the girls singles title)

The girls cross country team earned four points from its fourth-place finish at the state meet, and the marching band scored four more by advancing to state.

The robotics team also earned a point from qualifying for the state competition, while the cheerleading team scored a point by placing in the top 20 at state.

Wall, which finished second in the standings last year behind Holliday, won the Lone Star Cup in 2017.

Mason leads Class 2A with 62 points, which is 10 points ahead of Gruver and Panhandle and 11 ahead of Shiner.

Mason’s girls delivered 12 points from their state title in golf and 14 from their runner-up showing in basketball.

Mason’s football team earned 10 points for its run to the state quarterfinals, and the tennis program also scored 10 points after claiming four golds and four silvers at the state meet.

The other points came from the boys golf team taking third at state (6), the UIL academics team winning district and taking fifth at state (6) and the boys basketball team reaching the playoffs and winning a postseason game (4).

In Class 1A, the Concho Valley has four schools in the top 15 — led by Garden City in sixth with 42 points, along with Water Valley in seventh (39), Menard in 13th (31), and Veribest tied for 14th (30).

Jayton leads the standings with 59 points, just five ahead of Gordon.
