BROWNWOOD, TX — The Christoval Cougars overcame a loss in Game 1 of their area-round playoff series against Hawley on Friday to take both games Saturday and advance to the Class 2A Division I regional semifinals.
After dropping the series opener 3-1, Christoval won a 1-0 pitcher’s duel in Game 2.
The game was scoreless until the eighth inning when Logan Malley delivered an RBI double to score Ty DeBusk for the winning run.
Game 3 was played 30 minutes later, and Christoval again took care of business, especially with its pitching and defense in a 4-2 win.
All told, Christoval allowed only five runs in 22 innings in the series.
DeBusk threw 6.2 innings of shutout ball in Game 2 — while allowing four hits — before Ryler Hunt came on to record the final four outs without giving up a hit.
The Cougars, who have won 11 of their last 12 games, improved to 18-6-1. They move on to face No. 13-ranked New Home (24-7) next week at a site and time to be determined.
