AUSTIN, TX — The Mason Cowgirls’ quest for a fifth straight state title got off to a promising start Monday, but they have some company near the top of the leaderboard.
Mason’s opening-round score of 341 is good for a one-shot lead over Spearman heading into Tuesday’s final round of the UIL Class 2A State Tournament at Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin.
Sonora is 21 shots off the lead in third place, while Mason’s No. 2 team is impressively sitting in fifth place, 33 shots off the pace
Mason’s Ainsley Burns, who is aiming for a fourth consecutive individual state title, will have to make up some ground Tuesday.
Burns shot a first-round score of 76, which put her in second place, but she’s four strokes behind Bogota Rivercrest’s Alice Baird.
Crawford’s Avery Bolgiano is a shot behind Burns at 77, while two other players — Cisco’s Jakelee Wood and Spearman’s Izzabella Slover — shot a 78.
Other scores from Mason’s No. 1 team included Ruby Hills (85), who is in ninth place, followed by Bronwyn Underwood (88), Anna Whitworth (92) and Sophia Jordan (95).
Mason’s No. 2 team was led by Sabina Perez (87), who is tied for 10th, followed by Grace Klaerner (94), Cameron Asbill (96), Caitlin McCrea (97) and Kydie Kimbriel (115).
Sonora’s Brailyn Galindo led the Lady Broncos with an 87 that has her tied for 10th. Other scores included Lynden Cearley (89), Madison Galindo (91), Gentri Trainer (95) and Sofia Garcia (114).
Colorado City’s Kaylynn Epperson is in seventh after an 82.
Garden City Girls in 2nd After Opening Round
At the 1A state tournament at Crystal Falls Golf Club in Leander, Garden City’s girls shot an opening-round 415 that leaves them in second place, 10 shots behind Utopia.
The Lady Kats are shooting for a fourth straight state crown while trying to match their boys, who won the state championship last week.
No school has ever swept the girls and boys titles in the same year.
Garden City was led Monday by Keegan Batla, who shot a 94 for seventh place. Other scores included Joslyn Halfmann (103), Gracie Raney (108), Helen Marshall (110) and Karly Baker (120).
Round-Top Carmine and Crowell are tied for third at 419, just four shots behind Garden City, while Grady is fifth at 428 and Veribest is sixth at 432.
Grady’s Audrey Marler fired a 78 to give her a four-shot lead over the field. Utopia’s Kinsley Cox is second with an 82, while Crowell’s Sage Bearden is third with an 85.
Veribest’s Kayden Broadway led the Lady Falcons with a 91 that puts her in fourth place. The other scores for their four-player team included Stormie Luna (106), Bailey Erwin (114) and Chloe Day (121).
The only other area player in the field was Robert Lee’s Kylen Pitcock, who is tied for 31st after shooting a 109.
