Christoval Baseball Sweeps Ozona to Win Bi-District Title

OZONA, TX — The Christoval Cougars took two games against Ozona on Wednesday, capped by an eight-inning thriller in Game 2, to win their first-round playoff series.

After a 10-2 win in the opening game, Christoval survived a wild 14-11 shootout in Game 2.

The Cougars jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the top of the second inning in the second game and looked to be on their way to an easy sweep.

Ozona, however, stormed back with 10 runs to take a 10-7 lead after five innings.

Christoval answered with a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh to go back on top 11-10. To Ozona’s credit, the Lions then responded with a run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

Christoval then scored three times in the eighth and shut out Ozona in the botto half of the inning to hang on.

The Cougars were led by William Nye, who was a combined 6-of-9 at the plate Wednesday with two doubles, five RBIs and three stolen bases.

Blaze Webber, Ty DeBusk, Slayden Cross and Ryler Hunt all had two-hit games in the series, while Logan Malley had a home run and five RBIs in Game 2.

Cross pitched a solid game in the opener, allowing seven hits and one run in six innings while striking out five.

Christoval (16-5-1) advances to play Hawley or Bangs next week in the area round of the Class 2A Division I playoffs.
