AUSTIN, TX — Gov. Greg Abbott proclaimed Sept. 25, 2026, as Dolly Parton Day in Texas in recognition of the life of Dolly Rebecca Parton and her work promoting early childhood literacy.
“Dolly Parton gave children the gift of a first book and a path to read,” Abbott said. “Texas honors her life and her work. Today I proclaim Dolly Parton Day so families across our state remember a legend who put books in the hands of Texas children.”
Parton's Imagination Library provides enrolled children with a free, age-appropriate book each month from birth until age 5.
According to the Dollywood Foundation, more than 74,500 children across Texas receive books through the program, with more than 70 local program partners operating in 90 counties.
Sept. 25 also marks Give Like Dolly Day, an annual observance established by the Dollywood Foundation to support local Imagination Library programs. The foundation said the observance is intended to continue Parton's legacy of generosity, particularly her support for children and early literacy.
Abbott encouraged Texans to observe Dolly Parton Day with their families and support local libraries and community organizations that help provide books to children across the state.
