Wall Faces Another High-Profile Matchup Against Midland Greenwood

WALL, TX — Another week and another high-profile matchup for the No. 3-ranked Wall Hawks on Friday, this time against Class 4A Division I Midland Greenwood. Wall comes off a dominant 51-6 win over Ozona last week and looks to continue that momentum at home.

Coach Craig Slaughter gave his thoughts on his team's win last week and previewed the matchup with Greenwood after practice on Wednesday. Watch that interview above:

Wall's Gunner King had another impressive performance last weekend before he ultimately sat down in the second half. Against the Lions, King threw for 337 yards and five touchdowns, and the Hawks will need another solid performance on Friday when they take on the Rangers.

Greenwood is built very similarly to Wall this season. The Rangers have a lot of speed and an explosive offense that can turn an advantage into a blowout in a hurry. Wall needs to make stops when it can and take care of the football if the Hawks want to repeat their Week 1 win over a 4A school.

Greenwood currently sits at 3-1 on the year with wins over Jim Ned, Lubbock-Cooper and Wichita Falls Legacy. While Greenwood is considered one of the premier 4A teams in the state, their only loss this year was a head-scratcher. Lubbock-Cooper Liberty handed the Rangers a 56-25 drubbing in Lubbock. Not to take anything away from the Liberty Patriots, as they are ranked No. 5 in the state in 4A D-II, but on paper, the game seemed like it would have been much closer.

The only common opponent these two teams share this year is the Jim Ned Indians. Greenwood beat the Indians 39-12 in Midland, while the Hawks took down Jim Ned in Tuscola 49-13.

To win this matchup, Wall will need to continue to lean on its speed. Hudson Surber has emerged as one of the top talents in the Concho Valley and complements known threats such as Jager Thompson, Evan Boehle and Gunner Garza. King also needs to take care of the football and not turn it over. He's had success so far this season with 16 touchdowns to one interception, but he needs to remain disciplined in the pocket.
