SAN ANGELO, TX — The Angelo State University women’s basketball team opens its 2026-27 season this weekend at the D2 Conference Commissioners Association Tipoff Classic in Canyon.
The Rambelles begin their season at 2:15 p.m. Friday against New Mexico Highlands before facing Metro State-Denver at noon Saturday.
ASU is looking to carry the momentum from a strong second half of last season when the Belles had a late 10-game winning streak that helped propel them to the No. 6 seed in the Lone Star Conference Tournament.
They finished 15-12 overall and 13-7 in LSC play before being knocked out in the first round of the LSC Tournament by No. 3 seed UT Tyler, 64-57.
The Belles were picked to finish sixth this year in the LSC preseason poll.
Head coach Alesha Ellis begins her sixth season at the helm with the Belles just six victories away from reaching the 100-win milestone at ASU.
Ellis owns a 94-56 record during her five seasons with the program and a 283-108 career record over 12 full seasons.
The Belles return 64.2% of their scoring production from last season, led by junior guard Majik Esquivel. The Lubbock native averaged 17.1 points per game, ranking second in the LSC, and knocked down 60 3-pointers.
Taylor Grona and senior Stevi Lockhart also return after contributing 276 and 157 points, respectively, last season.
ASU has three area players on the roster — sophomore Halle Hughes from Christoval, junior Katy Elder from Coleman and freshman Anna Marie Whitworth from Mason.
The Belles will make their home debut at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, against Adams State. They’ll host Regis at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14.
