SAN ANGELO, TX — Zey Johnson’s breakout junior year may go down as the best rushing performance in Central Bobcats’ history.
With another big game last week, Johnson now has 1,452 yards and 19 touchdowns through eight games.
Johnson is only 250 yards away from breaking Central’s single-season rushing record of 1,701 yards, which was set by Daven Manning in 2016.
Johnson already owns the single-game rushing record after he ran for 353 yards against Belton last month.
Against Odessa High last week, he had 26 carries for 235 yards and four TDs.
The 5-foot-11, 220-pound Johnson has been a workhorse with 26.8 carries per game. He’s averaging 6.8 yards per carry and 181.5 yards per game.
He has topped the 100-yard mark in six of his team’s eight games.
Johnson has a chance to break the record at home this week against Midland High, though it would take another huge performance for that to happen.
Central (5-3 overall, 1-1 in district) has two games remaining in the regular season, including at Odessa Permian next week. The Bobcats are almost certainly headed to the playoffs, where Johnson would have at least one more game to add to his total.
