WALL, TX — The Wall Hawks and Lady Hawks are breaking new ground in their first season competing in UIL Class 4A team tennis.
After rolling through district play undefeated, Wall carried that success into the postseason, defeating Glen Rose 19-0 in their bi-district playoff matchup Monday to advance to the area round.
The Hawks will face Burkburnett in the area playoffs Thursday at Abilene High School. The matches are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
Elsewhere in Tom Green County, the No. 19-ranked San Angelo Central tennis team is also alive and well in the Class 6A playoffs. The Bobcats and Lady Cats rolled over El Paso Montwood 10-0 in the bi-district round Tuesday.
Central, which won its third straight district title, squares off with unranked Keller on Friday at Abilene High in the area round.

Wall is a Class 3A school, but the Hawks moved up to compete in Class 4A team tennis this season, giving the program an opportunity to test itself against larger schools in the UIL postseason.
For Wall head coach Gayla Parker, who is in her fourth year leading the program, the move was one she believed the Hawks were prepared to make because of the program's history of success.
“This is our first year to get to play up into 4A tennis, and so this is a new adventure for us,” Parker said. “However, in 3A tennis, we have had a winning tradition and have been very successful.”
Parker had experience with a similar transition while coaching at China Spring and believed Wall's established tennis program could make the jump.
“I wanted to play up,” Parker said. “I had done that at China Spring when we were 3A, and then we moved up to 4A, and so I knew that with Wall's traditions and legacy of winning, it would be a great transition for us.”
The results have backed up that confidence.
Wall compiled a 132-4 individual match record during district play.
The Hawks finished first in a large district that also included Snyder, Monahans, Fort Stockton, Big Spring, Midland Greenwood, Lake View, Sweetwater and Pecos. Snyder finished second, Monahans was third, and Fort Stockton took fourth to round out the district's playoff qualifiers.
Despite the 19-0 win over Glen Rose to open the playoffs, Parker said Glen Rose provided a difficult test for the Hawks.
“Glen Rose has a long history as well as being successful,” Parker said. “We knew that we would have our work cut out for us if we were going to win that. Although the scores did not reflect it on their part, they competed extremely well and put our kids to a challenge.”
Wall responded to that challenge and earned its first 4A playoff victory.
“We faced it head on,” Parker said. “I was so excited, and the kids, they're just hungry — hungry for this new adventure and new history for Wall.”
The next obstacle is Burkburnett.
Parker said the Hawks and Burkburnett have common opponents that give Wall's coaching staff an idea of what to expect in the area round. Both programs have connections to teams that faced Brownwood, while Burkburnett has also played Fort Stockton, which finished fourth in Wall's district and remains alive in the playoffs after defeating Brock.
Wall previously competed in the Texas Tennis Coaches Association's Class 3A-and-under state tournament, where Amelia Taylor won two state championships in a row. That competition is separate from the UIL team tennis postseason.

The Hawks also bring significant individual postseason experience into their current run.
Four players on this year's team competed at the UIL state tennis tournament last spring.
Taylor is a two-time state singles champion. Ava Duncan and Evelyn Itz finished second in girls doubles, while Kristian Hurst competed at state in mixed doubles before his partner, Ainsley Jameson, graduated last spring.
Coach Parker also pointed to Parker Dickens, Wall's No. 1 boys singles player, as a steady presence for the program throughout his high school career.
At the same time, Wall's lineup includes several younger players who have taken on significant roles. Notably, freshman Lane Lacy has worked his way into the No. 1 boys doubles lineup and No. 4 singles position.
Wall has only four seniors this season — Dickens, Duncan, Itz and Kylee Holik. Parker said Holik has also been a steady and aggressive player for the Hawks at No. 2 girls doubles and No. 5 girls singles.
“It's hard to single a kid out,” Parker said. “Collectively, they're a solid team. They've got a lot of grit and fortitude. And as I said, they're hungry and excited about this new challenge.”
That excitement has continued to build as the Hawks move deeper into unfamiliar postseason territory. Parker said the team gathered for dinner ahead of its area-round matchup and that the players were “so pumped” about the opportunity.
A victory over Burkburnett would move Wall into the regional semifinals and another step closer to the Class 4A state tournament.
The regional tournament will be played in Abilene, while the state tournament is scheduled for San Antonio.
