SAN ANGELO, TX — Angelo State battled No. 12 Central Washington throughout Saturday's Lone Star Conference matchup, but a 21-point second quarter helped the Wildcats pull away for a 41-14 victory at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field.
The loss dropped Angelo State to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in LSC play. Central Washington improved to 3-2 overall and remained unbeaten in conference play at 3-0.
The Rams finished with 420 yards of total offense, including 264 rushing yards, and recorded 22 first downs compared with 19 for the Wildcats. Four Angelo State turnovers, including two interceptions and two lost fumbles, helped Central Washington capitalize on its opportunities.
Central Washington opened the scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run with 2:02 remaining in the first quarter, taking a 6-0 lead into the second.
The Wildcats then scored three touchdowns in less than six minutes to build a 27-0 advantage. Central Washington's quarterback connected on a 29-yard touchdown pass before breaking free for a 76-yard touchdown run on the following drive. The Wildcats added a 30-yard touchdown before halftime.
Angelo State answered with its first touchdown of the night when Ashton Dickens broke free for a 59-yard touchdown run with 25 seconds remaining in the second quarter, cutting Central Washington's lead to 27-7 at halftime.
Neither team scored in the third quarter before Central Washington extended its lead with an 8-yard touchdown run early in the fourth.
The Rams responded with a 10-play, 75-yard scoring drive. Ayden Arp capped the possession with a 1-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 34-14 with 8:50 remaining.
Central Washington answered with another touchdown less than four minutes later, and Angelo State was unable to close the gap.
Dickens led the Rams with 102 rushing yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Cameron Dischler added 72 yards on 11 carries, while Arp rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown.
Arp completed 15 of 26 passes for 156 yards.
Alan Dobbins led Angelo State's receivers with six catches for 49 yards. Preston Baker caught two passes for 44 yards, including a team-long 44-yard reception, while Donny Bishop finished with four receptions for 37 yards.
Defensively, Owen Henderson led Angelo State with six tackles. Dabrein Moss, Devonte Robertson, Iverson Moore and Hunter Boudreaux each recorded four tackles.
Angelo State will remain home for its Homecoming matchup against Sul Ross State on Saturday, Oct. 10, at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
