Lake View Loses Overtime Heartbreaker to Big Spring

BIG SPRING, TX — In a matchup highlighted by record-breaking offense last year, Lake View and Big Spring’s rematch this season was defined by defense.

The two teams came up with one big defensive play after another Friday before the game headed to overtime at 20-20.

After Big Spring scored on its possession, the Steers’ defense forced a fumble near the goal line and recovered it to seal a 27-20 victory for its first win of the season.

It was a stark contrast from last year’s game that Lake View won 76-49.

It was also a heartbreaking finish for Lake View, which never led until Isaiah Rivera returned an interception 10 yards for a score to give the Chiefs a 20-13 lead with 4:51 left in the fourth quarter.

Big Spring managed to respond, however, and scored with 1:13 to play on a 12-yard run by Javon Jackson to send the game to overtime.

Jackson then scored on the Steers’ first play of OT from 25 yards out.

Lake View looked as if it was about to answer when Chris Alvizo hit Andrew Young for a quick pass, but the ball was knocked free as Young was approaching the goal line.

It was a game of missed opportunities for Lake View, which twice failed to capitalize after crossing Big Spring's 10-yard line in the first half. Each drive ended with an interception.

Lake View's defense forced three turnovers, including two interceptions by Juju Lacy, to keep the Chiefs in the game.

The game was scoreless until Big Spring's Jaylen Cooper scored on an 8-yard run with 2:24 left in the second quarter.

Lake View came up clutch, however, when Alvizo threw a jump ball to Young for a 6-yard TD pass on the final play of the first half to pull within 7-6 at halftime.

Big Spring extended its lead to 13-6 on a 70-yard TD pass from Jackson to Jayden Thomas with 3:39 left in the third quarter.

Lake View tied the game on the first play of the fourth quarter when Alvizo found Calvin Whitfield for a 24-yard TD pass.

Alvizo finished 23-of-41 passing for 210 yards and two TDs with two INTs. He also had eight carries for 35 yards.

Young had six catches for 76 yards and a TD. Whitfield had three catches for 55 yards and a TD, while Gabriel Alvarez had seven catches for 37 yards.

Lake View was playing without one of its top receivers, Chris Rodela, who was injured in last week's win over Pecos.

Linebacker Juan Ramirez had a team-high 16 tackles.

Lake View fell to 3-2 and will travel to play Levelland next week. Big Spring improved to 1-4 and will have a bye next week before visiting Pecos.
