SAN ANGELO, TX — The Lake View Chiefs shook off their first loss of the season with a 35-24 win over previously unbeaten Pecos on homecoming night Friday at San Angelo Stadium.
The game wasn’t as close as the final score would suggest as the Chiefs flew out to a 35-10 lead by halftime. Pecos scored twice in the final six minutes after the game was already out of reach.
Pecos had allowed only four touchdowns in the first three games of the season before Lake View jumped all over the Eagles with five TDs in the first half.
Despite a scoreless second half, it was still a strong bounce-back performance by the Chiefs after they suffered a 37-13 setback last week at Lubbock High.
"That loss, it hurt, but it was very, very critical coming into this week," said Lake View's Conner Williams, who had a 60-yard interception return for a TD to lead the Chiefs' defense. "We needed that humbleness. It exposed our weaknesses, and I'm honestly very grateful for it, and now I want to keep this momentum going."
Pecos was within 14-10 midway through the second quarter when the Chiefs took over with 21 points in the final 6:56 of the first half, sparked by a 53-yard TD catch by Andrew Young from Chris Alvizo.
Aiden Rivera then had a 10-yard TD grab with 1:06 left after breaking a couple tackles near the goal line.
Pecos was threatening to respond before Williams picked off a pass and returned it 60 yards for a game-changing score.
"Man, what a great interception and what a great athlete," Lake View head coach Hector Guevara said. "The want-to to get in the end zone. That was amazing, and it just turned the game around right there."
Young had four catches for 103 yards and two TDs, and he had an interception to set up the Chiefs' first score. Alvizo threw for 321 yards and four TDs on 23-of-40 passing with no interceptions, and he also had an impressive 71-yard punt.
Chris Rodela had five catches for 76 yards but was injured after a catch in the third quarter and didn't return.
Lake View's running game continues to be an issue, however, as the Chiefs managed only 44 yards on the ground.
Pecos running back Amare Griffin was a workhorse with 38 carries for 241 yards and two TDs. He entered the game with 438 yards and seven TDs while averaging 10 yards per carry. Lake View limited him to 6.3 yards per carry.

With Lake View's offense unable to get anything going in the second half, the Chiefs' defense secured the win by preventing the Eagles from scoring on seven straight drives.
"Our offense deserves all the attention. They're great. The defense's job is to go out there and hit somebody and see what happens and give them the ball back," Williams said. "The work that went into this offseason wasn't seen, but it was a lot this year, so it feels amazing."
Lake View is now 3-1 heading into next week’s game at Big Spring. Pecos fell to 3-1 and will host Lubbock Estacado next week.
Guevara said he was excited to see his team block out the distractions of homecoming week and deliver a win.
"We played good and played together," Guevara said. "We struggled in the second half and had a lot of missed opportunities, but I'm proud of those kids. They focused in this week and took care of business tonight."
