SEATTLE, WA — Seattle's defense intercepted Drake Maye three times in the fourth quarter as the Seahawks overcame an early injury to starting quarterback Sam Darnold to defeat the New England Patriots 13-10 Wednesday night.
The victory capped a Super Bowl banner-raising night for Seattle in a rematch against New England.
The Seahawks trailed 10-0 and managed only a field goal through the first three quarters after Darnold injured his hip on Seattle's opening possession. Lock took over at quarterback and struggled to generate offense until the fourth quarter, when Seattle's defense began creating opportunities.
Darnold came up limping after a third-down sack by Dre'Mont Jones on Seattle's opening drive. He went to the sideline medical tent before heading to the locker room.
Macdonald said initial tests showed Darnold did not suffer a broken bone, calling the news “positive.”
Lock, who threw only three passes last season, entered in Darnold's place. Seattle's offense remained stagnant until the fourth quarter, when the Seahawks erased a 10-point deficit.
Seattle got on the scoreboard with a field goal in the third quarter before its defense took control.
Nehemiah Pritchett intercepted Maye, giving Seattle an opportunity to tie the game. Facing fourth-and-1, Lock connected with Smith-Njigba for a 45-yard touchdown to make it 10-10.
Julian Love intercepted Maye on New England's next possession, and Seattle took its first lead on Jason Myers' 26-yard field goal.
The Patriots still had an opportunity to tie or win the game in the final minute, but Josh Jobe made a toe-tapping interception in the end zone to secure the Seahawks' victory.
Maye, who finished as the NFL MVP runner-up last season, threw all three of his interceptions in the fourth quarter.
New England scored the only touchdown of the first half after Jobe was called for pass interference against A.J. Brown on a deep flea-flicker attempt. Maye connected with rookie Eli Raridon for a 2-yard touchdown on the next play to give the Patriots a 7-0 lead.
Another Seattle penalty contributed to New England's second scoring drive. Chazz Surratt was called for roughing the punter on the opening possession of the second half, extending the drive and helping set up Andy Borregales' 50-yard field goal for a 10-0 Patriots lead.
Seattle responded with 13 unanswered points to complete the comeback.
The Patriots return home to face Pittsburgh on Sept. 20. The Seahawks travel to Arizona on Sept. 20.
