LUBBOCK, TX — Bo Davis, who rushed for 1,349 yards last year as a sophomore, has been ruled ineligible just days before the start of the 2026 football season.
Davis transferred from Lubbock High during the offseason to district rival Frenship Memorial.
The District Executive Committee voted 4-2 to deny his eligibility, determining the move was made for athletic purposes.
The UIL State Executive Committee then had a 2-2 vote Monday, and the stalemate meant the DEC’s decision would be upheld.
Davis had a 356-yard rushing performance (along with a 41-yard TD catch) last year at San Angelo Stadium in Lubbock High’s 50-49 loss to Lake View.
Lubbock High traditionally has had a struggling program and went 3-7 last year. Frenship Memorial is heading into its first season of varsity football. The Panthers went 7-3 last year as a JV program.
According to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Davis’s mother said she enrolled her son at Memorial because she had separated from her husband and moved to a new part of town.
However, Lubbock High head coach Juan Rodriguez stated that Davis had mentioned to coaches that his father wanted him at another school. When Rodriguez filled out Davis's Previous Athletic Participation Form, he indicated he believed the transfer was for athletic purposes.
Davis’s mother defended her decision to transfer him to Memorial.
"I found a house that fit in my budget," Kristin Davis said. "I wanted to be close to my parents. It's so far away, it's on the way opposite side of town, Lubbock High is. I work for LISD, and I understand all the things, but it just made more sense for him to be close and go to his home school."
The 5-foot-10, 205-pound Davis will now have to sit out his junior season — at least at the varsity level — after a breakout sophomore campaign.
He’s the latest notable Texas football player to be ruled ineligible. Quarterback Colton Nussmeier, who is committed to play at the University of Georgia, lost his eligibility case after trying to transfer from Flower Mound Marcus to Denton Ryan. He has since left the state to play in Louisiana. John Meredith III was also deemed ineligible after transferring from Euless Trinity to North Crowley. He decided to reclassify and join the University of Texas this season.
