SAN ANGELO, TX — Ayden Arp, a redshirt sophomore from Cedar Park High School, has been named the new starting quarterback for the Angelo State football team.
Arp (6-foot-2, 208 pounds) will take the reins of the offense after the Rams lost two other QBs to the transfer portal during the offseason. Braeden Fuller transferred to Arkansas, while Kaeden Smith left for Prairie View A&M.
Arp started ASU’s season finale last year in a 45-44 loss to West Texas A&M. He was 13-of-26 passing for 189 yards and two touchdowns with one interception, along with 20 carries for 144 yards and a TD.
Arp led Cedar Park to a 9-4 record his senior year while throwing for 2,808 yards and 20 TDs. He also had 392 rushing yards and nine TDs.
“He’ll come in as our No. 1 quarterback, and he’s done an outstanding job, but Ayden knows people are on his heels still competing,” ASU head coach Jeff Girsch said. “I expect him to continue what he’s done, and that’s being a great leader and a great student of the game. He has a ton of respect from his coaching staff and from his teammates.”
Girsch said Arp is part of a packed QB room with transfer Carson Woods (Liberty HS), who previously played at North Texas and Bakersfield College, and redshirt freshmen Landon Kieselhorst (Deer Park HS) and Maddox Maher (Dripping Springs HS).
“All four of those guys have showed moments of greatness, and I’m just excited about the depth we have in that room,” Girsch said.
ASU is just two years removed from an undefeated Lone Star Conference title run, but the Rams struggled to a 6-5 record last year.
ASU will open the 2026 season at home at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, against Fort Hays State at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field.
