SAN ANGELO, TX — A strong summer run has propelled San Angelo tie-down roper Joel Harris to within striking distance of No. 2 in the world standings.
Harris had the best week of his career last week, pocketing over $39,000 after winning the average in Spanish Fork, taking second place in Salt Lake City and sixth place in Ogden.
He previously won rodeos in Prineville, Oregon and Redding, California, helping move his season earnings up to $158,749.80.
He now sits less than $7,000 behind second-place Kincade Henry of Mount Pleasant, Texas, and he’s nearly $19,000 in front of fourth-place Haven Meged of Miles City, Montana.
Defending world champion Riley Webb sits atop the standings with $227,746.52.
Harris, a 23-year-old who has been roping professionally since 2022, finished fourth in the world standings last year and qualified for the National Finals Rodeo for the second consecutive time.
His brother, Ty, has also had a strong push recently to move from 17th in the world standings to 10th. The top 15 qualify for the season-ending NFR, which Ty has advanced to seven straight years.
San Angelo’s other tie-down roping standout, Dylan Hancock, has fallen outside the top 15 to 18th place. He’s about $7,500 behind 15th place.
The PRCA season ends Sept. 30.
All three San Angelo cowboys have qualified for the NFR the last two years. Joel Harris was fourth last season, while Hancock was sixth and Ty Harris was ninth.
Garden City barrel racer Jordan Driver was in contention for an NFR spot earlier in the year, but she has slipped to 34th place with season earnings of $48,524.
Other area competitors in the world standings include Abilene barrel racer Sydney Graham in ninth place and Odessa barrel racer Katelyn Scott in 10th.
