COLLEGE STATION, TX — The Sonora Broncos’ run at the 7-on-7 state tournament ended Friday with a 34-20 loss to Tioga in the second round of the championship bracket.
Sonora’s tournament began with three straight victories to win its pool Thursday, followed by a 27-12 win over Albany on Friday in the opening round of the championship bracket.
Sonora’s dreams of a state-title run ended, however, against a Tioga team that was the first to score more than 20 points against the Broncos.
It was still a successful showing for Sonora, which was making its 12th appearance at state since 2010. The Broncos were the Concho Valley’s only representative this year.
Sonora, a Class 2A Division I school, was competing in Division III for 7-on-7, which comprises schools from 1A to 3A Division II.
The Broncos are coming off a 7-4 season last fall and are expected to be one of the Concho Valley’s top teams in 2026.
Another school from our region competing at state was Goldthwaite, which knocked out Tioga 34-12 in the next round before falling 21-6 to West Rusk in the semifinals.
Ganado then topped West Rusk 30-13 to claim the state title.
Hawley and Coahoma each lost in the second round of the championship bracket.
Graham defeated Van Alstyne 32-25 to win the state title in Division II for 3A D-I and 4A schools. Sweetwater lost in a 35-34 shootout to Hamshire-Fannett in the first round of the championship bracket.
The Division I state title for 5As and 6As will be decided today.
