SEATTLE, WA — The United States continued its strong start at the FIFA World Cup, defeating Australia 2-0 on Friday to secure a spot in the knockout round with one group-stage match remaining.
Coming off a 4-1 win over Paraguay in its opener, the U.S. made it two straight victories under head coach Mauricio Pochettino. The Americans joined Mexico as the second team to clinch advancement and did so with a game to spare for the first time in team history.
The U.S. took control early, benefiting from an own goal by Australia’s Cameron Burgess in the 11th minute to grab a 1-0 lead. The Americans continued to apply pressure throughout the first half, and Alex Freeman added a second goal in the 43rd minute to extend the advantage before halftime. Initially called offsides, VAR review showed that Freeman remained onside before heading the ball into the back of the net.
Despite being without Christian Pulisic, who is sidelined with a calf injury suffered in training and aggravated against Paraguay, the U.S. controlled the match. The Americans dominated possession at 62% and completed nearly 450 passes — roughly double Australia’s total — while consistently creating scoring chances.
Though there were no goals in the second half, the performance marked a significant step forward for the U.S. defense, which recorded its first shutout in 10 matches dating back to a September friendly against Japan. Facing an Australian team that also entered with three points from its opener, the Americans remained composed defensively while continuing to generate opportunities on the attack at Lumen Field.

With the win, the United States not only clinched a knockout stage berth with a game still to play, but also won its first two World Cup matches for the first time since 1930.
Even without Pulisic, the United States played with a noticeable swagger, suggesting it is not just content with reaching the knockout rounds, but is aiming for a deep run in the tournament.
Australia, which entered the match after a 2-0 win over Turkey, struggled to maintain possession and generate sustained offensive pressure against the U.S. defense.
With six points through two matches, the U.S. will close out group play in its final match against Turkey before turning its attention to the knockout stage. The USA will play Turkey on Thursday, June 25, at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles at 9 p.m.
