SAN ANGELO, TX — Angelo State University has joined the list of schools offering Mason’s Flora Appleton a chance to play college basketball.
Appleton, a 6-foot-2 all-state shooting guard, has already been offered by three NCAA Division I schools — San Jose State, Siena and Bellarmine — along with D-II Chaminade.
But ASU has some factors in its favor.
The D-II school is by far the closest to the small Hill Country town of Mason, and ASU already has two of Appleton’s former teammates. Anna Marie Whitworth signed with the Rambelles for basketball, and Ainsley Burns signed with ASU for golf.
The Rambelles basketball team went 15-12 last season and lost in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament.
Appleton was a key part of Mason’s team last season that reached its first state final in program history. The Cowgirls had a record of 40-2 and were ranked No. 2 in the state.
Appleton averaged 13.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game and earned Class 2A all-state honors from the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and Texas Girls Coaches Association.
She was also named the Newcomer of the Year in District 29-2A.
Appleton began her high school career at 1A Richland Springs, where she was a district MVP and an all-state selection. She transferred to Mason after her sophomore year.
She surpassed the 1,000-point career mark last year early in her junior season.
Outside of school, Appleton plays for Phoenix Select Basketball, an AAU team based out of Austin.
Mason senior-to-be Flora Appleton is a small-town girl receiving some big-time college basketball interest with offers from three NCAA Division I schools already.
