Mason Cowgirls Roll Past San Augustine to Reach First State Final

MUMFORD, TX — The No. 2-ranked Mason girls basketball team is headed to the state championship game for the first time in program history after a 43-22 win over San Augustine on Monday.

It was the 31st win in a row for the Cowgirls, who improved to 40-1.

Mason previously reached the state semifinals three times from 2018-20, but the Cowgirls finally broke through to the state final this year with Monday’s convincing win.

Mason will play the winner of No. 1 Panhandle and No. 3 Cisco in the Class 2A Division I final at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

The Cowgirls had a dominant playoff run to reach the state final, winning every game by double digits. Their first four wins were against Brackettville (88-16), Skidmore-Tynan (50-33), Iola (61-31) and No. 7 Flatonia (42-29).

Mason is led by 6-foot-2 forward Anna Marie Whitworth, who has scored more than 2,000 points in her career and has received a handful of college offers, including from Angelo State University.

Whitworth is averaging 21 points per game, followed by Flora Appleton with 13 points and Ainsley Burns with 10 points. Burns has already signed with Angelo State, though she’ll be coming to San Angelo as a member of the Rambelles’ golf team.

Mason is coached by Alicia Cummings, who recently earned her 400th career win.
