SAN ANGELO, TX — The Angelo State Rambelles overcame a cold shooting night and instead leaned on their defense to pull out a 48-46 win over the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas on Wednesday night at the Junell Center–Stephens Arena.
With the victory, Angelo State improved to 7-9 overall and evened its Lone Star Conference record at 5-5.
The Rambelles shot just 28.6 percent from the field, including 23.1 percent from 3-point range, and went 60 percent from the free-throw line. Texas A&M-Kingsville finished at 32.7 percent shooting overall and 25 percent from beyond the arc. However, the Belles forced 22 turnovers on defense. Angelo State capitalized on those turnovers, converting them into an 18-2 advantage in points off mistakes.
Majik Esquivel led all scorers with 15 points, connecting on three 3-pointers. Stevi Lockhart added 12 points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Taylor Grona contributed five points while filling the stat sheet with eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block. Keniah Williams pulled down seven rebounds, while Landry Morrow finished with five rebounds and three steals. Kenna Wood and Briley Merket also scored for the Rambelles.
Angelo State returns to action Saturday, Jan. 24, when it travels to Kingsville for a rematch with Texas A&M-Kingsville. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
