LUBBOCK, TX — Texas Tech Red Raiders forward JT Toppin was recently named the Naismith National Player of the Week and Big 12 Player of the Week after dominant performances in victories over Utah and BYU last week.
Toppin averaged 29 points and 13 rebounds in the two wins and extended his streak to seven consecutive double-doubles. It marks his second Big 12 Player of the Week honor this season and the first national weekly award of his career.
Toppin leads the Big 12 with 12 double-doubles, 11.2 rebounds per game and 4.71 offensive rebounds per game. He ranks fourth in the conference in scoring at 21.6 points per game, a figure that places him 13th nationally. He also leads the nation with 160 made field goals this season.
The junior recorded 31 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists and five blocks in a win over Utah, becoming the first Division I player to reach those marks in a single game since Georgetown’s Mike Sweetney in 2003. He followed with 27 points and 12 rebounds against BYU, making him the second player — alongside Kevin Durant — to open Big 12 play with five straight double-doubles.
Toppin went 3-for-4 from 3-point range in both games. His 43 career double-doubles rank second among active Division I players.
The 2024–25 Big 12 Player of the Year and a consensus second-team All-American, Toppin has now earned four Big 12 Player of the Week honors in his career, including one earlier this season after a 23-point, 14-rebound performance against Oklahoma State.
A Wooden Award midseason watch list selection, Toppin has totaled 1,414 points, 827 rebounds and 148 blocks in 86 career games. Through five Big 12 contests this season, he is averaging 23.0 points, 12.8 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game.
Toppin was also named to the Big 12 Starting Five for the week, joining Jaden Bradley (Arizona), Themus Fulks (UCF), Baba Miller (Cincinnati) and Darryn Peterson (Kansas), who was selected as the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
