Rain Risk Today, Higher Chances Later This Week

SAN ANGELO, TX — The National Weather Service has placed parts of west central Texas under a marginal risk of excessive rainfall this afternoon through tonight, with showers and a few thunderstorms expected to develop over the Permian Basin and move eastward.

Storms could produce locally heavy rainfall that may cause minor flooding, with the heaviest amounts anticipated in the western Big Country and western Concho Valley. Excessive runoff may lead to flooding of creeks, streams, roadways, and low-lying or flood-prone areas.

The Day 1 excessive rainfall outlook shows a marginal risk (at least a 5% chance of rainfall leading to flash flooding) covering areas including near Abilene, San Angelo, Sweetwater, Sterling City, and Ozona.

Looking ahead, a more active pattern is expected later in the week. On Thursday and Thursday night, numerous showers and thunderstorms are forecast, with the highest coverage in a slight risk area (at least a 15% chance of excessive rainfall leading to flash flooding). Heavy rainfall in short periods of time could bring localized flooding and flash flooding.

The Day 4 outlook shows marginal and slight risk zones stretching across much of the region, including areas around Abilene, San Angelo, Brownwood, Junction, and Ozona.

Rain chances are set to increase through the week, peaking Thursday through Saturday, according to the NWS San Angelo weekly outlook. Locally, heavy rainfall and flash flooding will be possible on Thursday and Friday. Maximum precipitation probabilities reach 65% to 90% Thursday and Friday for several locations, including Abilene, Ballinger, Brady, Brownwood, Coleman, Haskell, Junction, Ozona, San Angelo, San Saba, and Sweetwater.

Temperatures are expected to remain mild across West Central Texas this week, with highs generally in the upper 70s to mid-80s early in the period before cooling slightly into the 70s by the weekend.
