Angelo State Theatre to Open Fall Season With Modern Take on Shakespeare Classic

SAN ANGELO, TX — Angelo State University's University Theatre will open its fall season Thursday, Oct. 1, with “After/Caesar,” a modern retelling of William Shakespeare's historical tragedy “The Tragedy of Julius Caesar.”

Performances will begin at 8 p.m. Oct. 1-3 and Oct. 8-10 in the Elta Joyce Murphey Auditorium in the Mayer Administration Building, 2601 W. Ave. N. The production will conclude with a 2 p.m. matinee Sunday, Oct. 11.

Tickets are $10 for the general public and $5 for non-ASU students. Admission is free for Arts at ASU subscribers, ASU students and ASU activity card holders. Tickets can be purchased online through the ASU box office or in person at the Carr Education-Fine Arts Building.

“After/Caesar” is based on Shakespeare's “The Tragedy of Julius Caesar” and was adapted by ASU theatre faculty members Joshua W. Brewer and Derek Rhein.

The production places Shakespeare's political tragedy within the context of the 2008 financial crisis and explores questions surrounding ambition, leadership and anarchy while presenting the original story's civil conflict through a modern setting.

Brewer and Rhein are co-directing the production.

The student cast includes Jordan Chapman-Davies, Ana Tony, Zaiden Lopez, Sydney Fisher, Francisco Rodarte, Rylan Herrera, Edmund Davies, Kirby Paugh, Robyn Wagner, Lawrence Smiley, Emily Morris, Addie Gregoire and Perla Escarcega.

Student understudies are Rae Brown, Mikayla Salazar, Peyton McWhorter, Guillermo Mancha III, Adriel Bearden, Jonathan Raper and Nayeli Gonzales.

The student production staff and crew includes Nahum Rodriguez, stage manager; Ren Dutton, assistant stage manager; Gabbie Flores, scenic designer; Zjay Wright, lighting designer; Ayla Doran, assistant lighting designer; Natalie Madrid, costume designer; Railyn Young, assistant costume designer and dresser; Robyn Wagner, props designer; Kylen Murphy, assistant technical director; Zaiden Lopez, scenic charge; Mark Velez, deck crew; Autumn Drake and Myracle Mitchell, wardrobe supervisors; Michael Axtel, dresser; Taylor Schroder, light board operator; and Michael Abbott, sound board operator.

The ASU faculty and staff production team includes Rhein and staff technical director Lance Turner as sound designers and staff costumer Mayra Torres.
