SAN ANGELO, TX — A bovine in Tom Green County has been confirmed to be infested with New World screwworm, the Texas Animal Health Commission said Friday.
“On June 11, 2026, a Tom Green County bovine was confirmed to be infested with NWS,” the TAHC said in a Facebook post. “An infested zone is being formed around the detection and will be reflected on the TAHC interactive map once it is officially established.”
The commission’s interactive map of confirmed NWS detections is available online.
Tom Green County Judge Lane Carter also confirmed the case in a Facebook post.
“Many may have heard that we possibly have a case of New World Screwworm (NWS) in Tom Green County," Carter stated. "We can officially say that the tests did come back positive. Right now, the lead agency is the United States Department of Agriculture. On the state level, the primary agency is the Texas Animal Health Commission, and the secondary is Texas A&M AgriLife.”
Carter encouraged residents who suspect an NWS case to “please reach out to one of these agencies, preferably starting with our local office first.”
