BALLINGER, TX — Ballinger radio station KRUN 1400-AM announced Wednesday that it is signing off for the last time following “devastating storm damage” to its facilities last month.
KRUN has been on the air since 1947, serving Runnels County and the AgriPlex of Central West Texas. It is the only locally owned radio station in the county.
“We are deeply grateful for every listener, advertiser, employee, broadcaster, coach, athlete, farmer, rancher, business owner, and friend who made this station part of their lives,” KRUN stated in a Facebook post. “Thank you for allowing us into your homes, vehicles, farms, ranches, and businesses for generations.
“While the airwaves may fall silent, the memories never will.”
A severe storm on May 10 that produced a tornado between Ballinger and Winters damaged KRUN’s building and tore off parts of its roof. As rain has continued to fall in the weeks since, the interior of the building has sustained more and more damage.
The conditions have largely forced KRUN off the air since then, though some broadcasts were recently held online through a livestream.
The station’s owner, J.R. Dunn, said it would take an estimated $125,000 in repairs to save the building and purchase new equipment. He said he’s holding out hope for a miracle before he cancels KRUN’s license, which can remain active for one year.
Those seeking to make donations can begin the process by contacting Dunn at (325) 450-1920 or by mailing KRUN at P.O. Box 230, Ballinger, TX, 76821.
