San Angelo Ties for 3rd-Lowest Unemployment Rate in Texas

SAN ANGELO, TX — San Angelo’s unemployment rate edged down to 3.1 percent in April, tying with College Station-Bryan for the third-lowest rate among Texas metropolitan areas, the Texas Workforce Commission reported.

The San Angelo metropolitan statistical area recorded a civilian labor force of 62,100, with 60,100 employed and 1,900 unemployed, according to not seasonally adjusted figures. The rate was 3.2 percent in March and 2.8 percent a year earlier.

Statewide, Texas added 300 nonfarm jobs in April to reach a total of 14,394,300. Over the year, the state gained 82,400 jobs for a 0.6 percent growth rate, outpacing the national rate by 0.4 percentage points.

Texas’s civilian labor force stood at 15,894,800 after decreasing by 21,800 during the month. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained stable at 4.3 percent.

Professional and business services led private-sector gains with 4,700 jobs added. Construction added 3,500 jobs, while trade, transportation and utilities gained 1,300. Construction posted the highest annual growth rate of any major industry at 2.1 percent for the 21st consecutive month.

“Texas continues to demonstrate economic resilience by outpacing the national growth rate and reaching nearly 14.4 million jobs,” TWC Chairman Joe Esparza stated. “Through our support for initiatives like the Texas Jobs Council, we are gathering the insights necessary to keep our workforce competitive, so Texas employers can continue to lead their industries and drive our state’s growth.”

Midland recorded the state’s lowest unemployment rate at 2.9 percent, followed by Abilene at 3.0 percent.

The employment estimates, produced in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, are subject to revision. The May labor market information is scheduled for release June 19.
