Mayer Museum Unveils Three Ceramic Exhibits for 41st San Angelo Ceramic Symposium

SAN ANGELO, TX - Angelo State University's Mayer Museum will present three separate ceramic exhibits as part of the 41st Annual San Angelo Ceramic Symposium, beginning with an Opening Reception on Wednesday, April 15, in the Mayer Museum at 2501 W. Ave. N.

The exhibits will include an ASU student exhibit, an invited artists exhibit, and an exhibit of entries in ASU's inaugural Mayer National Juried Student Ceramic Competition:

  • "Shaping the Path: ASU Ceramics Student Show"
  • "Community" - works by invited artists Steve Hilton and Von Venhuizen
  • "1st Mayer National Juried Student Ceramic Competition Show"

The opening reception for the exhibits will run from 5-8 p.m. on April 15 and is free and open to the public. "Shaping the Path: ASU Ceramics Student Show" will then remain on display in the Mayer Museum through May 9. The other two exhibits will remain on display through Sept. 19.

"Shaping the Path: ASU Ceramics Student Show" celebrates the works that students have developed throughout the spring semester at ASU. It will provide the students with valuable experience presenting their work in a professional gallery setting , while giving the community an opportunity to support emerging artists.

"Community" is an exhibit by ceramic artists Hilton and Venhuizen that brings together two distinct approaches to contemporary clay. Their work creates a dialogue between collective experience and individual reflection, highlighting how clay can foster both community engagement and thoughtful contemplation. Hilton is the Fain Professor of Fine Arts in Ceramics at Midwestern State University. Venhuizen is an associate professor of ceramics at Texas Tech University.

The Mayer National Juried Student Ceramic Competition is a new contest to showcase the work of undergraduate and graduate students from across the U.S. The exhibit of entries features 22 ceramic pieces submitted by students from 12 universities. The Mayer Museum's goal with the competition is to encourage emerging ceramic artists and provide a space where effort and persistence lead to success.

The ASU Mayer Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and there is never an admission fee.

In partnership with the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, ASU will also host the 41st Annual San Angelo Ceramic Symposium on Friday, April 17, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Mayer Museum.
