Flood Watch Issued for West Central Texas Through Friday Morning

SAN ANGELO, TX — The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for areas mainly west of a Brownwood-to-Junction line, effective from Thursday afternoon through Friday morning.

Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected to produce 1 to 3 inches of rainfall over much of the watch area, with localized totals as high as 5 inches possible. This is likely to cause flash flooding, and considerable flash flooding is possible. Excessive runoff may flood rivers, creeks, streams, low-lying and flood-prone locations, poor-drainage and urban areas, and low-water crossings.

The watch covers portions of west-central Texas, including Tom Green, Taylor, Nolan, Coleman, Callahan, Coke, Concho, Crockett, Fisher, Haskell, Irion, Jones, Runnels, Schleicher, Shackelford, Sterling, Sutton and Throckmorton counties. It includes cities such as San Angelo, Abilene, Sweetwater, Ballinger, Coleman, Sterling City, Ozona and Sonora.

National Weather Service officials urge residents never to drive onto roadways covered in water and never to walk, swim, or drive through flowing flood waters. “When flooded, turn around, don’t drown,” the service stated.

Temperatures will remain very warm Wednesday and Thursday, with highs generally in the upper 80s to mid-90s across the area. A strong cold front is expected to pass Thursday afternoon and night, bringing much cooler conditions Friday into the weekend and gusty north winds on Friday. Highs are forecast to fall into the 60s by Friday and Saturday before rising slightly into the 70s on Sunday.
