San Angelo Police Warn of Scam Calls

SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo Police Department is warning residents about a scam in which callers impersonate officers and demand money to avoid arrest.

Police said they recently received a report of a citizen receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be Lt. Ben Spencer with the department.

The department stated that officers will never call and demand money to avoid arrest or ask people to pay money over the phone to resolve a warrant or avoid arrest. Scammers can also spoof caller ID so that a call appears to come from an official city or police department number.

“If you receive a suspicious call, do not send money or provide personal or financial information,” information from the police department stated. “Caller ID can be misleading, even when a call appears to come from an official SAPD number.”
