San Angelo Man Arrested After Threatening Officer With Handgun

SAN ANGELO, TX — A San Angelo man has been arrested after taking police on a short foot pursuit and pointing a handgun at an officer.

Matthew Rick, 38, was arrested by the San Angelo Police Department for evading arrest and aggravated assault against a public servant.

According to court documents, on July 25, 2026, at about 1:50 a.m., police performed a traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle at the intersection of West 29th Street and North Bryant Boulevard. The vehicle pulled into the parking lot at the Star Stop convenience store, 2902 N. Bryant Blvd.

The officer pulled in behind the subject, who was identified as Rick, and began giving him commands, which he ignored. Rick began walking around the front of his vehicle and took off through the Sonic parking lot next door to the convenience store. He only stopped running to tell the officer that he had a firearm. He continued to run, now through the McAlister’s Deli parking lot, before he stopped and again said he had a gun.

The officer saw Rick with a black firearm that he said was pointed towards him. Rick then took off again before falling to the ground. As the officer, who was now assisted by another officer, was trying to take Rick into custody, Rick reached into his pocket, produced a firearm and threw it towards the vehicle he was stopped in.

The handgun was recovered, and Rick was taken into custody.

The investigator checked for Rick’s criminal history and noticed that he was convicted of possession of a controlled substance. 

Rick was booked into the Tom Green County Jail and is currently being held on a $398,162 bond. He was charged with evading arrest or detention, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a dangerous drug, and aggravated assault against a public servant.
