San Angelo Man Killed in Mother's Day Shooting

SAN ANGELO, TX — A 21-year-old San Angelo man was killed and multiple other victims were injured in a shooting early Sunday — Mother’s Day — police said.

San Angelo police responded to the 600 block of East 44th Street around 1:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a shooting, Chief Travis Griffith said at a press briefing Sunday morning. Officers found multiple victims at the scene. The 21-year-old died from his injuries.

Griffith described the shooting as involving a “known suspect-victim connection” and said investigators are confident it was not a random crime. He said the area is secure and that extra officers have been assigned there.

“This is a snapshot in time of where we’re at within a current investigation,” Griffith said. “The information that we’re going to provide today is subject to change.”

Griffith noted an increase in violent crime in San Angelo over the past couple of months, but highlighted that the department’s Criminal Investigations Division and Special Operations Unit have quickly arrested suspects in previous homicides. He said detectives are pursuing multiple leads in this case.

The chief also acknowledged staffing and funding shortages facing the department, but said city officials are working to address them. He added that San Angelo is not immune to a statewide rise in juvenile and young adult crime that has been documented in recent years.

Wrapping up the briefing on Mother’s Day, Griffith asked the public to keep the victims’ families in their prayers.

“For their loved ones, this is always a difficult time,” he said.

Because of the ongoing investigation, Griffith said he would not take questions beyond clarifications of what he had already stated. He said a full press conference would be held later when more details can be released without compromising the case.

No suspect information or additional victim details were released Sunday.
