Two Killed in Head-on Crash in Comanche County

COMANCHE COUNTY, TX — Two people were killed, and one person was injured Friday morning in a head-on collision on State Highway 36, the Texas Department of Public Safety reported.

It happened at about 11:40 a.m. about a half-mile south of Farm to Market Road 1476. The posted speed limit is 75 mph. Weather was clear, and the roadway was dry.

Rickey Mariott, 75, of Evant, driving a 2020 Kia Sorento, and passenger Bernadine Mariott, 75, of Evant, died at the scene. Both were wearing seat belts.

Adam Guerra Jr., 26, of Pasadena, driving a 2020 GMC 2500 pickup truck, suffered minor injuries. He was wearing a seat belt.

A preliminary investigation found the vehicles were approaching each other from opposite directions. Guerra was traveling southbound in the oncoming lane while attempting to pass a line of vehicles in a no-passing zone.

As the vehicles neared each other, both drivers moved onto the shoulder and then back into the lane. The maneuvers mirrored each other and resulted in a head-on collision in the northbound lane.
