New Mexico Man Dies in Nolan County Motorcycle Crash

BLACKWELL, TX — A 39-year-old New Mexico man was killed Saturday night when his motorcycle veered off State Highway 70 north of Blackwell and struck a tree, the Texas Department of Public Safety reported.

David Ross Pettingill Jr. of Moutair was traveling northbound on SH 70 at mile marker 354 around 9:50 p.m. when he failed to maintain a single lane, according to the preliminary investigation. The 2025 Indian Chieftain Dark Horse motorcycle left the roadway, hit a tree, overturned and ejected the rider.

Pettingill, who was not wearing a helmet, was transported to Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by Dr. Woods. No one else was injured.

Weather conditions were clear, and the road was dry. The posted speed limit was 55 mph.
